In a 2014 article Dr Wang and colleagues, from the Division of Radiation Health, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), USA demonstrated PEA can be used to protect tissue against radiation damage. PEA has been known since the 70s to protect tissue against many stressors.
Now Wang et al showed the protective effects against radiation damage of PEA works via the mechanism defined in 1993 by the Nobel laureate prof. Rita Levi-Montalcini: the mast cell.
Their conclusion was:
These data demonstrate that the absence of mast cells exacerbate radiation enteropathy by mechanisms that likely involve the coagulation system, anti-inflammatory cytokine signaling, and the innate immune system; and that these mechanisms are regulated by PEA in a mast cell-dependent manner.
